GP/GP VMO – George Town Medical Centre

Doctor Full time, Permanent, Part time Launceston & North Date advertised: 27 October 2026

General Practitioner (GP) / GP VMO – We are seeking dedicated GPs to join our established team in George Town. Full-time and part-time positions are available, with flexible working arrangements.

Organisation

GTMC is part of the Health Hub Group, a GP-led Tasmanian primary care group – not a corporate – with clinics across Tasmania and a strong group-wide education and teaching program.

George Town is one of Australia’s earliest European settlements, established in 1804. Enjoy beaches, fishing and boating, the Low Head lighthouse and little penguin colony, and the Tamar Valley wine region, with Launceston’s schools, airport and city amenities less than an hour away.

George Town Medical Centre is a well-established rural (MM5) general practice at the mouth of the beautiful Tamar River, around 45 minutes from Launceston, serving a district population of about 7,000. The practice sits next door to the 15-bed George Town District Hospital, where our GPs provide VMO services. As the hospital has no emergency department, the practice also provides emergency care to the community – making this genuine broad-scope rural general practice.

With onsite GP radiology, point-of-care ultrasound, procedural work and a large, highly skilled nursing team, GTMC offers the clinical variety of rural medicine with the support of an experienced, teaching-focused team. The practice is part of the Health Hub Group – a GP-led Tasmanian group, not a corporate.

We offer a supportive, collaborative environment where doctors can thrive professionally while making a meaningful difference to patient care.

Teaching is at the heart of the practice. We hold weekly clinical meetings and tutorials, and our supervisors genuinely enjoy teaching and helping registrars achieve Fellowship – Dr Tim Mooney was an RACGP college examiner for many years.

The practice has 10 consulting rooms and 6 treatment rooms. Our large nursing team, with three to four nurses working each day, assists doctors with surgical procedures, wound management, immunisations, infusions, ECGs, audiometry, lung function testing and triage of emergency presentations.

The role

  • Broad-scope general practice for patients of all ages, including chronic disease management and preventive care
  • Emergency care for the George Town community, supported by our nursing team
  • VMO services to the George Town District Hospital (15 acute beds)
  • Procedural work including fracture management, skin and minor surgery and vasectomies, supported by onsite GP radiology and point-of-care ultrasound
  • Participation in the practice on-call / emergency roster (registrars are included)

Requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification
  • Current registration, or eligibility for registration, with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA)
  • Fellowship (FRACGP and/or FACRRM) is strongly welcomed but not essential for the right candidate – GP registrars, non-VR doctors and those working towards Fellowship are encouraged to apply
  • Experience in general practice; emergency, procedural or rural experience is highly regarded

What’s on offer?

  • Estimated gross billings of $400,000–$600,000+ per annum for a full-time equivalent position
  • Visa sponsorship available for the right candidate – Fellowship strongly welcomed but not essential
  • Broad scope of practice – emergency care, hospital VMO work and procedures in a true rural setting
  • On-site diagnostics – onsite GP radiology and point-of-care ultrasound
  • Large nursing team – three to four nurses each day supporting procedures, emergencies and chronic care
  • Teaching culture – weekly clinical meetings and tutorials with experienced supervisors, including a former RACGP examiner
  • Not corporate – part of the GP-led Health Hub Group, where doctors are known and heard
  • Flexibility – flexible full-time or part-time arrangements
  • MM5 / DPA – moratorium-eligible, and eligible for rural workforce incentives and Health Workforce Scholarship Program funding
  • Lifestyle – coastal living on the Tamar, under an hour from Launceston
